The Journey to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Perspectives from a Latinx Genetic Counselor
Join Joanna Mercado, MS ’19 Human Genetics & Genetic Counseling, the 2021 Jefferson College of Life Sciences (JCLS) Early Career Alumni Award recipient, recounts her journey to becoming a healthcare professional while also representing the underrepresented minority community.

Ms. Mercado describes how her Jefferson student experience helped pave the way for her to become an advocate for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts within the healthcare community. She also discusses the work currently being done, along with measures that still need to be taken in the future.

Joanna Mercado, MS '19
Genetic Counselor @Genome Medical
Ms. Mercado is a board-certified genetic counselor specializing in cancer genetics. She currently works at Genome Medical, a medical practice that provides genetic services to patients across all 50 states. Prior to joining Genome Medical, she worked at the Cancer Genetics and Prevention Clinic at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass. When not seeing patients, Ms. Mercado focuses on incorporating justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts within the field of genetics and genetic counseling. She currently serves as co-chair of the Anti-Racism Subcommittee for the Genomic Technology Special Interest Group within the National Society of Genetic Counselors and serves as a mentor for students in the Minority Genetic Professionals Network. Ms. Mercado received a BS in Biological Sciences, with a minor in Spanish, from the Universty of the Sciences, lectured at Boston University, Brandeis University, and the University of the Sciences, and has presented at Jefferson.
